Jan Dostál drops out of university and applies for a job as an engine-driver. Although by nature not suited to a uniform, he has to negotiate numerous official and unofficial pitfalls. The first includes human and institutional moral degeneracy. The second includes the machinations of three women (a greedy doctor, an ambitious sportswoman and a fervent railway guard) who compete for him with varying degrees of tenderness and aggression. This is all very alarming, but the real calamity comes on Dostál's first journey with a mountain engine, during which the train is hit by an avalanche. Only then do people's real characters make themselves known.
