A contagious illness breaks out in the settlement of the Fishers. The only person to have avoided it is the young fisherwoman Happy Moments. The other clan members believe she is bewitched, and has brought this disaster on them. They decide to kill her, but Falcon and Ravenfeather save her and take her to the settlement of the Ravens. There, too, however, fears of the disease make her unwelcome. Falcon, Ravenfeather and Happy Moments leave the village with corn for the next sowing, and start to look for a place to settle. They find refuge with the mistrustful tribe of the Shepherds, but a harsh winter and hunger await them.
