After her husband's tragic death, Romany widow Věra Horváthová finds herself in a tough situation. Her husband had been in charge of all the payments, and Věra, who has seven children, does not realise that she owes two hundred thousand crowns in rent. They are moved out of their Prague flat to a dormitory. Věra is also unable to deal with the bureaucrats who are trying to take her children into care. The case is taken on by a young and ambitious lawyer, who does not know the Romany world and is not too interested in it. Despite her initial prejudices and the fact that she took on the case as a career springboard, she is unable to give up the apparently hopeless case.
