Jan Chladil, once a wealthy farmer, dies in exile in 1965, having been driven out fourteen years earlier as a "kulak." He had openly confronted the local collectiviser, which became a pretext for punishment in which his farm became the booty of the new rulers. After his death his wife Matylda, who had something of a hard time with her overbearing husband, decides to arrange for his coffin to be taken to the family grave. However, she needs permission from the people who offended against the family the most. Her insistence on the ancient laws of morality and faith overcome the dogged resistance, and the burial turns into a collective demonstration.
