Professor Jindřich Šimek, a former political prisoner, is meant to be returning to his university job after a unique heart operation. Then, for no apparent reason, he sacrifices himself for an unknown girl whom he sees every day from his hospital window, releasing a flock of doves. When one day the girl suddenly disappears, he regains his enthusiasm for life and expends every effort to prevent looming disaster, even at the price of his own death. Only then is he truly noticed by the apathetic people around him, until then absorbed in their own interests. His fate becomes a metaphor for that of the nation.
