Silence
"Silence and people flow through the streets...." Bohdan Milokašek's tensely emotive song provides the commentary for a visual testament from the burial of Jan Palach and the preceding days. The martyr-like shots of the suffering Palach on his hospital bed are interspersed with shots of Prague, buried in grief, and almost resounding with the silence of the suicidal appeal. An elegy that, like Palach's deed itself, fell on deaf ears.

Searching Home
The communist regime tried to tempt back the many people who emigrated after the August 1968 invasion by granting an amnesty in May 1969. Some people are firmly decided not to return, while others are working out what to do. Literary scholar and politician Eduard Goldstücker cannot imagine life without home. After twenty years, Adolf Müller, owner of the emigré publishing house Index, talks about the painful loss of home.

The Report of the Public Opinion Research
In spring 1969 the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences' Research Institute for Public Opinion carried out an extensive survey to find out Czechoslovaks' opinions on the political situation of the time. After respondents' answers were statistically processed it emerged that the dominant feelings regarding the situation in society after 21 August 1968 were dissatisfaction, uncertainty and fear that the practices of the 1950s would return.
