A May procession is heading for the church. Suddenly, the "terrible lord of the woods" Vilém bursts into the church with his band of thieves, and robs the villagers of everything of value. Among those present is a beautiful dumb girl, Jarmila, the mistress of the elderly miller Schiffner, who is the father of the expelled Vilém. Jarmila and Vilém meet in the evening and make love. The bitter Vilém then orders his thugs to destroy everything in his father's mill. The miller, enraged, demands that the authorities send troops to catch the bandits. Jarmila, who is supposed to be moving to Schiffner's house, is confused by her feelings. Vilém tries to convince her to leave with him...
