A documentary about a recidivist who, from the age of 16, has been followed by the camera over two decades, both while in prison and during his short periods on the outside, against a background of major political change in central Europe. René's story begins in prison under communism, continues through the Velvet Revolution and reaches an apparent culmination with the presidential amnesty. However, René is soon back in prison, and enters the European Union as a prisoner again. Over the years spent behind bars he has been tattooed, published two books, had two love affairs, burgled the director's flat and fallen ill with multiple sclerosis.
