It is summer 1947, and the five members of a group of Ukrainian guerilla bandits fighting their way through Czechoslovakia are looking for refuge and a doctor for their wounded leader. They take over Ondřej Baran's lonely farm in the Beskydy mountains, and threaten to kill his family if he does not help them. Ondřej brings food and a doctor back from town. The tension mounts, as does the latent and open aggression of the bandits and also the uncertainty of Ondřej's 12-year-old son, who wonders whether his father is being cowardly. Soon, however, he learns the truth, and discovers why his father tried at the last minute to teach him a farmer's duties.
