Thirty-eight-year-old Magda is one of life's unlucky people. She has a string of failures and unfulfilled wishes behind her, the most recent being a hairdressing salon which went bust before it even opened. She is in a lot of debt, has to leave her rented flat and is afraid for herself and her teenage daughter Agáta, who is dealing with her mother's helplessness and deepening depression in her own way. Magda's friend Zora says Agáta can live with her for a while, but after she meets a rich emigré from Canada, she begins to get jealous of Agáta and takes her to her mother in the dormitory. Agáta, uprooted, joins a gang of cynical troublemakers.
