Dr. Josef John, a young obstetrician, is having a secret affair, as non-committed as possible, with the wife of his colleague, Arnošt Rýdl. However, his attention is drawn by the new nurse, Anna. She causes more than one problem, but is highly-skilled on the labour ward, and is clearly genuine in contrast to her hypocritical surroundings. When Rýdl catches his wife in flagrante with his colleague, their friendship and joint research project falls apart. The consequences of John's womanising catch up with him; he fails to finish his research, Anna disappears somewhere and he himself leaves the hospital. At his new job he meets a very pregnant Anna...
