Concentration camp commander and former professional boxer Walter Kraft finds a sparring partner in Slovak prisoner Ján Komínek. With an ostentatious sense of fair play, the former boxer produces a rival who, after proper nutrition and training, manages to beat him. Kraft's sense of superiority is shaken, but his wife persuades him to suppress his desire to liquidate Komínek, and he even enables him to escape from the camp. In the end, however, the spirit of the remorseless pragmatist of death beats that of the sportsman, and Komínek finds himself having to choose between the natural instinct of self-preservation and solidarity with the other prisoners.
