By now Štěpán Šafránek has lost many of his youthful ideals, and no longer even recites poems to girls. After Kendy films a report from the hospital, editing his friend's answers so they seem to be ridiculing the ambitious hospital director, Štěpán is sacked and has to return to his mother and home town. While his friends, acquaintances and former classmates are successful entrepreneurs, Štěpán has problems finding work. His conscience prevents him from engaging in a lucrative but immoral business involving human health, and no one wants to lend him money to set up a private practice. His only refuge is with his new female friend, Ute the pharmacist.
