Year ONE – 1968  /October 24 – 31/

Festival director: Ladislav Ženíšek
Festival moderator: dr. František Goldscheider

Originally 8 films were supposed to compete. However the selection committee had a complicated situation because this time they did not select only from production of the passed year, but from all 300 films shot in the years 1960-1968. The number of selected films had finally grown to double.

Films:
Až přijde kocour /V. Jasný/, Starci na chmelu /L. Rychman/, Černý Petr /M. Forman/, Transport z ráje /Z. Brynych/, Intimní osvětlení /I. Passer/, Sedmikrásky /V. Chytilová/, Každý den odvahu /E. Schorm/, Slnko v sieti /Š. Uher/, Kristovy roky /J. Jakubisko/, Vyšší princip /J. Krejčík/, Lásky jedné plavovláky /M. Forman/, Obžalovaný (J. Kadár – E. Klos/, Markéta Lazarová /F. Vláčil/, O slavnosti a hostech /J. Němec/, Ostře sledované vlaky /J. Menzel/, Obchod na korze /J. Kadár – E. Klos/

The selection of the films was carried out by a selection committee /13 members including the chairman and the secretary/. Members were the Czech and Slovak representatives of FITES, ČSF, film critics and FAMU representatives. The selection committee was at the same time a jury.
The chairman of the jury dr. Stanislav Zvoníček about the jury proceedings: “…We did not vote at all! We discussed every step until we agreed that we cannot go any step further and that there are fewer films remaining. It is worth mentioning that it was Menzel’s film Closely Watched Trains, Forman’s Loves of a Blonde, Kádár’s The Shop on the Main Street, Schorm’s Courage for Every Day and finally Němec’s film The Party and the Guest. From these films we ended up with two, namely The Party and the Guest and Courage for Every Day. And then we told ourselves, you know what, lets screen them! We screened both films and there was no doubt about which one of them should win...”
